The U.S. Navy showed off its latest toy on Wednesday, announcing that it's been using a laser mounted on the USS Ponce in the Persian Gulf. The laser weapons system (LaWS) is “almost like a Hubble telescope at sea,” said Rear Adm. Matthew L. Klunder, the Navy’s chief of naval research. “Literally, we’re able to get that kind of power and magnification.” The 30-kilowatt gun has already withstood a 35 mph sandstorm, and each shot only costs about $0.59.
