First the ATF, now City Hall. The mayor, the police chief, and a city councilman of the New Mexico border town of Columbus are accused of consipiring to sell weapons to Mexican drug cartels. Federal agents arrested the three men along with seven others in part of a crackdown on cross-border gunrunning. Mayor Eddie Espinoza allegedly bought 22 pistols and leased an apartment in El Paso, Texas, where weapons were stored, while Police Chief Angelo Vega bought bulletproof vests to be smuggled into Mexico. Palomas, across the border from Columbus, is in the midst of a years-long battle between two Mexican drug cartels.
