Most awesome scientific discovery of the week or beginning of a real-life version of The Thing? Scientists studying Lake Vostok in Antarctica published a paper earlier this week claiming that they have found DNA from 3,507 organisms in the icebound body of water. Vostok has been buried beneath 12,000 feet of ice for more than 15 million years and was once thought to be totally sterile because of its extreme conditions. But after researchers drilled deep late last year, they found not only hundreds of previously undiscovered bacteria but also an astonishing biodiversity that includes multicellular organisms. Now that's what we call cool.
