The newly elected president of Somalia escaped unharmed from an attack by three suicide bombers during a news conference at his temporary home in Mogadishu on Wednesday. The raid, carried out by al Qaeda–linked militants, did not harm President Hassan Sheik Mohamud, but left four others dead—among them an African Union soldier. The militants were reportedly members of Al-Shabab, one of the deadliest militant Islamist groups in Africa, which controls a large majority of Southern somalia. The Parliament’s election of Hassan Sheik Mohamud as president this past Monday ended a transitional government that has been in place in Somalia since 1991.
