For their pictures that were worth a thousand words and then some, Newsweek and The Daily Beast took first place in three of this year’s National Press Photographers Association Awards. Alejandro Cartagena won for his disarming front of book photo in Newsweek of a man self-immolating in protest of China's occupation of Tibet, as well for his photo of a bull and matador in the category of Best Magazine Illustrative Story. James Wellford was honored with the coveted title of Best Magazine Picture Editor of the year. Other winners of this year’s best of photojournalism awards include Aaron Huey, who took home the prestigious Cliff Edom “New America” Award for his picture story “In the Shadow of Wounded Knee” in National Geographic magazine.
