Newt Gingrich said Friday that Washington state went about legalizing gay marriage “the right way.” It was hardly a show of support—Gingrich himself has said he is not in favor of gay marriage. But he said on a stop in the state capital that the bill, signed by Washington’s Democratic governor last week, was right because it went “through voters, giving them a chance to vote and not having a handful of judges arbitrarily impose their will.” Republican opponent Rick Santorum has taken a hardline approach on the issue, saying recently that he is in favor of a federal constitutional amendment banning marriage between couple of the same sex outright. The issue has been a stumbling block for Republican candidates. Last year Rick Perry said New York’s vote to approve gay marriage was “fine by him” before backpedaling to say that while he thought the issue was one to be decided by the states, “gay marriage is not fine with me.”
