The Association of LGBTQ Journalists (NLGJA) on Wednesday announced the winners of its 2016 Excellence in Journalism Awards, with The Daily Beast being honored in three categories. The top prize, Journalist of the Year, was given to BuzzFeed’s national LGBT reporter Dominic Holden, for his “strong mix of thoughtful trans stories, a good take on familiar subject matter, some really strong characters and good depth.” The Daily Beast senior editor and writer Tim Teeman was runner-up for that top prize, and was the runner-up in the Excellence in Profile Writing Award for his interview with the mother of Tyler Clementi, the bullied gay Rutgers student who committed suicide. Daily Beast contributor Heather Boerner was award first place in the Excellence in HIV/AIDS Coverage Award for her extensive coverage of HIV medications. Among the other top prizes, the NLGJA awarded its Al Neuharth Award for Innovation in Investigative Journalism to Jim Burress of 90.1 WABE for his explosive piece on how Fulton County fails to spend federal funds allocated for HIV prevention.
