Cambridge professor emeritus Robert Edwards has won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his breakthrough research on in vitro fertilization; his work on infertility began working on in the 1950s. Since the first “test-tube baby” was born in 1978, about four million children have been born thanks to IVF. The Nobel panel called that first birth “a paradigm shift.”
