Liz Cheney Already Stumping for Cheney/Palin 2012
If Liz Cheney has any say in the matter, the 2012 presidential race is going to be a bit of a flashback to elections past. On Fox News Sunday, the former vice president’s daughter said she “absolutely” takes Sarah Palin seriously as a 2012 presidential candidate and said it would be “nothing short of sexist” to imply she’s not a serious candidate. Later in the program, in a discussion of Obama’s bowing before the Japanese emperor, Cheney, in what is either the worst nightmare or the greatest dream of the Mother Jones crowd, floated her dad as a potential 2012 candidate as well.
Hillary Addresses Governor-Run Rumor With Sledgehammer Subtlety
Is Hillary Clinton going to make a run for the governor of New York anytime soon? No way, she tells George Stephanopoulos on This Week. Not only is she sticking with her secretary of State gig, but she has a very specific, Tony Soprano-esque request for how she would like Stephanopoulos to handle the cold, dead body of the rumor: “If you could be please put it in a little box and send it off somewhere, I’d appreciate it.”
David Brooks on Sarah Palin: “She’s a Joke”
David Brooks better get ready for the backlash on Limbaugh sure to come this Monday. Appearing on This Week, Brooks goes rogue on Sarah Palin, calling her “a joke” and “a potential talk-show host” who has little hope of getting elected president. As for her populist credentials, Brooks doesn’t think much of those, comparing her to Ronald Reagan, who was far less hostile to big cities (and, perhaps, the kind of Republicans who live in them).
Rudy Giuliani Flip-Flop on Terror Trials?
Guess who put Rudy Giuliani on the hot seat this Sunday? None other than Fox News’ Chris Wallace, whose network has come under considerable fire recently for being too friendly to Republicans. Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Giuliani says he believes the 9/11 terror suspects should stand before a military tribunal—no shock there—but Wallace wastes no time in trotting out old quotes from the former NYC mayor praising the use of civilian courts in previous terrorism cases.
Newt Backs Obama?
Don’t be alarmed if you look out your window and see the sky crowded with winged pigs. That’s only a side effect of one of the more unlikely ideological couplings we’ve seen in a while: On Meet the Press, Newt Gingrich sided with the president. The former Speaker of the House cited Obama’s courage in trying to enact “dramatic, bold reforms” in education.
Smackdown of the Week: David Zurawick vs. Chris Plante
There’s a case to be made that the loss of Lou Dobbs from CNN means the loss of the network’s sole conservative voice. There’s a better case to be made that Dobbs’ relentless pushing of “birther” conspiracy theories was just bad journalism, and David Zurawick, appearing on CNN’s Reliable Sources, makes it at the expense of radio talk-show host Chris Plante. For the record, Chiyome Fukino, to whom Plante refers, is the director of the Hawaii State Department of Health.
If Only Every Pundit Talked This Way…
We hate to say it, but of late it feels as if The McLaughlin Group has lost a step. It’s not the talent of the regulars or its collective brainpower; it’s simply that the show seems to be recorded on a Thursday, meaning that by Sunday, it’s often missing juicy stories (this week, for instance, there’s no mention of Palin’s book, Obama’s bow, or the issue of trying the men behind 9/11 in New York). But give John McLaughlin his due: Sometimes there’s just a moment that reminds you why you keep coming back. This one is about 10 seconds long.
