New documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden show that the National Security Agency has had agents in scattered parts of the world working on programs that use “physical subversion” to enter and compromise networks and devices. “Under cover” operatives in China, Germany, and South Korea helped the NSA access sensitive data and global communications systems. The documents also show that the NSA works with companies both in the U.S. and abroad, spending “hundreds of millions of dollars” to weaken their encryption systems and penetrate computer networks. It is unknown whether this was done with or without the knowledge of the host countries.
