Of the roughly 700,000 requests made under the Freedom of Information Act in 2014, the Associated Press reports that the government censored or withheld information in 250,500 cases. Further, federal employees regularly misapplied the law and censored information just because it might be embarrassing, according to the AP. In an additional 215,000 cases, the government said it couldn’t find records, that a request was unreasonable or improper, or the person refused to pay for copies.
