President Obama on Wednesday designated two new national monuments, one around the Bears Ears Buttes in southeastern Utah and another around Gold Butte in Nevada. In total, the new designation protects 1.35 million acres of federal land, part of an effort to secure Obama’s environmental legacy before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. The new monuments include Native American sites of sacred importance and wildlife habitats in the region. “Today’s actions will help protect this cultural legacy and will ensure that future generations are able to enjoy and appreciate these scenic and historic landscapes,” Obama said in a statement.
