President Barack Obama is expected Monday to announce plans to send an additional 250 troops to Syria to support local forces in the battle against ISIS. The deployment will boost the number of U.S. forces in Syria to about 300, with most coming from special-operations forces, the AP reports. The group will also include medical and logistical personnel. Obama is expected to make the announcement in Hanover, Germany, where he met with Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the Syria crisis. The two leaders will meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President François Hollande, and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renziafter his speech. The Wall Street Journal first reported Obama’s decision on Sunday.
