At least one officer has died and another was in emergency surgery early Friday morning after they were shot in the Southcrest neighborhood of San Diego. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Thursday, when the two officers came under fire by an unknown assailant. The second officer is expected to survive. Panic ensued as police helicopters searched for the suspect, along with members of the SWAT team. After several hours of searching, the suspect was taken into custody, though the motive remains unclear and the suspect’s identity is still unknown. Police found him after a blood trail led to his location. The attack comes as police across the country are on heightened alert over a recent backlash against officers following several police shootings.
