A class-action lawsuit has been filed against two officials in an Ohio juvenile court system that claims warrants without probable cause are authorized for arrest and incarceration, mostly against black children. One of the plaintiffs, a 17-year-old black high-school student, was arrested and jailed for a month on suspicion he had participated in an armed mugging. Charges were eventually dropped as there was no evidence connecting him to the crime, but the boy had already been removed from his history class and served detention, some of it in isolation. According to the lawsuit, black children in Hamilton County last year were nearly 10 times more likely to be arrested than their white counterparts, and twice as likely to be placed in detention.
