This probably isn’t the news President Obama wanted shortly after he announced plans to open up new waters to offshore drilling: The sunken oil rig where an explosion killed 11 workers off the Louisiana Gulf coast is now leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico, says the Associated Press. The leak is spilling about 11,000 barrels, or 42,000 gallons, of oil each day; by end of the day Saturday, the sheen was 20 by 20 miles. The company that owns the rig and the federal government are trying to use remote-controlled vehicles to close off the valves on the sunken rig. If that fails, the backup solution of intervention drilling could take months.
