A former University of Mississippi student has pleaded guilty to threat and intimidation charges related to him hanging a noose on a statue of civil-rights activist James Meredith. A court ordered the university to admit Meredith in 1962 over segregationists’ objections, and he was escorted to campus by armed federal agents. The noose and an old Mississippi flag with the Confederate “stars and bars” were put on Meredith’s statue in February 2014. Graeme Phillip Harris may face up to a year in prison and a fine of as much as $100,000.
