Former Olympic track and field star Carl Lewis, who set world records for sprint relays, now wants to run in political circles. The nine-time gold medalist formally announced his candidacy for New Jersey state senator today. Lewis, a Democrat, is known for setting Olympic world records in long jump and relay events in the 1980s. The New Jersey native just might fit the bill for a politician: Lewis, 49, was notorious for keeping the media at arm’s length at the height of his fame, while his confidence and winning personality landed him an acting career after he retired from sports.
