In Muslim-majority Malaysia, where homosexual acts are illegal, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has had his acquittal overturned on sodomy charges brought by the government. Anwar led a strong opposition campaign in the 2013 general elections, and claims that the charges are part of a political smear campaign. Anwar was deputy prime minister from 1993 to 1998, and was found guilty in 2000 of sodomy with his wife’s driver. That ruling was overturned in 2012 by Malaysia's supreme court, citing lack of evidence—but now that acquittal has been thrown out, after the government appealed. "All over again, after 15 years, they want to put me in the lockup and that is why they are rushing," Anwar said.
