More than 100 vehicles were involved in a string of accidents along a stretch of Interstate 40 in North Carolina on Sunday, injuring at least 20 people and shutting down parts of the freeway for hours. North Carolina Highway Patrol spokesman Jordan Pack said there were 20 minor injuries, but no fatalities, in a series of nine accidents along the interstate in Alamance County, just east of Burlington. Emergency officials told the Times News of Burlington the pileup began when an accident launched a Jeep onto another car. Officials told WRAL-TV the wet road could have contributed to the accidents and rubbernecking may have also been a factor in others.
