Four Pakistani newspapers made hay today by publishing sensational stories based on fake WikiLeaks cables. In the false documents, U.S. diplomats were quoted as describing an Indian government run by Hindu fundamentalists, with military leaders that are vain and responsible for “genocide.” The alleged documents also claimed there were spies in India reporting to Islamist groups near Pakistan’s tribal belt. But according to a database search by the Guardian newspaper, no such leaks were released. The published stories were from the Online Agency, a Pakistan-based news agency that did not contain bylines.
