House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is scheduled to meet with Donald Trump on Thursday, called 2016’s election “one of the most grueling primaries in modern history.” Ryan said he doesn’t intend to pretend that he supports Trump when he doesn’t yet. “To pretend we’re unified as a party... we go into the fall at half sprint. This election is too important to go into the election at half-sprint.” The speaker added, “We have an obligation to merge and unify around our common principles,” but clarified, “I don’t really know him. I’ve met him once ... We cannot afford to lose this election to Hillary Clinton.” Ryan has indicated that if Trump prefers he step down from the convention chairman post, he would do so.
