After a salmonella scandal, questionable deaths, and several high-profile recalls, the Peanut Corporation of America filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Virginia and is liquidating its assets. The company is still the subject of a federal criminal investigation based on evidence that it may have knowingly shipped salmonella-tainted products to customers, including prducts tied to more than 600 illnesses and nine deaths. In what turned into the largest food recall in American history, Peanut Corp recalled 2,000 products. Shipping plants in Georgia and Texas were discovered to be shockingly substandard and investigations from the Food and Drug Administration and state health and agricultural agencies are still pending.
