It may be too soon to lift the ban on gays openly serving in the military, according to Pentagon leaders, who penned a letter to Congress recommending further planning before any official switch is made. The “strongly worded” letter warned, in particular, of the need to devise a strategy for dealing with opponents to overturning the law, reports the Associated Press. “Our military must be afforded the opportunity to inform us of their concerns, insights, and suggestions if we are to carry out this change successfully,” said the letter, which was co-signed by Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Advocates for the policy’s overturn are seeking an immediate freeze, and Nancy Pelosi has recommended that the law go unenforced until it can be changed officially. A spokesman for the Obama administration called the president’s commitment to repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell “unequivocal,” adding that Obama “is committed to getting this done both soon and right."
