Protests began in St. Louis on Friday following the acquittal of a white police officer charged with killing a black man. Jason Stockley was found not guilty of first-degree murder in the 2011 shooting death of Anthony Lamar Smith, a 24-year-old black man. Smith was shot and killed after a high-speed car chase in which he was a drug suspect. Prosecutors alleged that Stockley had planned to kill Smith, shooting him five times and then planting a revolver in his car. Stockley alleged that he had acted in self-defense. Several protesters were reportedly pepper sprayed by police.
