The periodic table has grown by two boxes, as scientists have added a pair of manmade elements to the chart. The elements are known as Elements 114 and 116; their permanent names and symbols will be chosen later. Both elements have only existed in real life for a few seconds; scientists created them by smashing atoms together. The total number of elements is now 114, as Elements 113 and 115 have not yet been accepted. Scientists add an element about every two-and-a-half years.
