It was anything but a feeding frenzy at the box office this weekend, with Piranha 3D grossing a mere $3.6 million, placing fourth in the lineup, behind fellow first-weekers Vampires Suck and Lottery Ticket. The Expendables continues to dominate, and Eat Pray Love is down to fifth. Overall, box office earnings were 6 percent below the same weekend last year, which saw the release of Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. Piranha, with its good press and whopping 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, was expected to do much better—and with costs greater than $24 million, it had to. The Wrap attributes it’s dud opening to people’s reluctance to pay $15 or more, because of the 3D technology, for a ticket for a genre movie.
