Pirates raided a Vietnamese tanker and killed one of its 16 crew members Sunday. “Armed robbers had boarded a tanker. They shot a crew member on the head and killed him,” said Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau’s Kuala Lumpur-based Piracy Reporting Center. At the time of the attack, the vessel was off the eastern coast of Malaysia during a voyage to transfer asphalt from Singapore to Vietnam. While the pirate attack was the first in Malaysian waters in almost two years, there has been a spike in raids in Southeast Asia. Of the 178 pirate attacks that occurred in the first three quarters of 2014, 103 occurred in Southeast Asian waters.
