According to a report in The Dallas Morning News, the Balch Springs Police Department fired officer Roy Oliver on Tuesday after he fatally shot 15-year-old Jordan Edwards over the weekend. Edwards’ brothers were also in the car and initially police claimed that the car was aggressively backing up toward them. The police department said Oliver violated several policies, but would not say which ones. “Not only have Jordan’s brothers lost their best friend; they witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless, murder,” the family of Edwards said in a statement. “Their young lives will forever be altered. No one, let alone young children, should witness such horrific, unexplainable violence.” Police were reportedly in the neighborhood because of a call about a house party. Police Chief Jonathan Haber said he watched body-cam footage of the shooting and determined that the car was in fact moving forward when the officer fired and one of Edwards’ brothers was driving. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting.
