A Gallup poll released Friday showed that 53 percent of Americans believe that same-sex marriage should be recognized by law with the same rights as traditional marriages. The results were based on Gallup's three-day Values and Beliefs poll in May, which it has tracked every year since 2004 (the first poll ever done on the topic was carried out in 1996). This year showed a nine-point increase in support for gay marriage—the largest increase ever in a one-year period—but the shift was exclusive to independents and Democrats. Republicans' numbers did not change from last year. One particularly interesting result from the poll: More people support same-sex marriage between younger partners than they do between older partners.
