Administered by Columbia University, this year's Pulitzer Prizes were announced Monday in 13 journalism categories and seven arts categories, and went to both expected and unexpected winners. Unlike in recent years, awards in journalism were given to writers and reporters from a variety of publications, including the Sarasota Herald-Tribune (investigative reporting) and Newark's Star-Ledger (feature writing). The highly coveted public service Pulitzer went to the Los Angeles Times. The New York Times and Los Angeles Times each won two awards. Jennifer Egan won the fiction Pulitzer for her bestseller A Visit From the Goon Squad, while Ron Chernow's Washington: A Life won in the biography category, and Kay Ryan took the prize for her book of poetry, The Best of It: New and Selected Poems. The strangest bit of news: No award was given for breaking news reporting, despite the Pulitzer committee nominating several newspapers in the category.
