Pussy Riot Takes the Kremlin to Court

Members of Pussy Riot are preparing to sue Russia in the European Court of Human Rights over their imprisonment. Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova claim that their time in prison amounted to torture. They are suing the Kremlin for €120,000 ($161,704) each in compensation for the 21 months they served in prison and pre-trial confinement, as well as €10,000 ($13,244) in court fees. “They didn’t get a fair trial here in Russia so they want to get it finally,” said Pavel Chikov, the lawyer representing the two women. “This is a case about freedom of expression and fair trial first of all.” Read the lawsuit here.
