Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized Thursday for an airstrike by its military that accidentally killed three Turkish troops in Syria, Turkey’s government reports. The soldiers were reportedly participating in an operation to assist Syrian rebel forces in pushing ISIS fighters out of al-Bab. Russia entered Syria in September 2015 in order to prop up the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and has been accused of aiding Assad in committing war crimes against the Syrian people.
