Aren't organ transplants supposed to save lives? Health officials say that a man in Maryland has died of rabies, which he contracted from an infected kidney transplant more than a year ago. Three other patients who received the donor's heart, liver, and kidney have been treated as well. The donor died of raccoon rabies in Florida in 2011, though doctors from the Centers for Disease Control say they did not suspect rabies as the cause of death in the donor and thus did not test for it. CDC officials also said in a statement that, despite the case, the benefits or organ transplantation "generally outweigh the risks."
