Visitors from around the country descended on Washington, D.C., on Saturday to join Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert’s joint rally. The mix between entertainment and politics was brought into sharp relief by the reaction to one of its performers, Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam. His performance riled conservative writer Michael Goldfarb, who recalled 1989 accusations that Islam had supported a fatwa against Salman Rushdie. Other guests included Sheryl Crow and Mavis Staples. Estimates of the crowd have been placed at about 200,000.
