Rand Paul made his first visit--and the first by a national member of the GOP in nearly 20 years--to the historically black Howard University. Paul sang the praises of the Republican Party and the benefits its policies could have on African Americans if they would only just give it a chance. "The Democratic promise is tangible and puts food on the table, but too often doesn't lead to jobs or meaningful success," he told the mostly black audience. "I would argue that the objective evidence shows that big government is not a friend to African Americans." Paul also emphasized the message that has been repeated by the Republican Party in its recent effort to court minority voters--that it won't get anywhere with the demographics its alienated for decades if it doesn't try.
