Brazilians are known for their passion, especially when it comes to soccer. But referee Gabriel Murta took it all a little too much to heart when arguing about one of his calls in the city of Brumadinho. Onlookers say Murta was slapped and kicked at by a manager and player demanding a red card against the opposing team, after which Murta, who is reportedly a police officer by day, stalked to the locker room and returned brandishing a pistol. Luckily, players stepped in and restrained the hot-headed ref.
Referee association president Giuliano Bozzano defended Murta, saying he felt threatened and just wanted to defend himself. He’s now undergoing psychiatric evaluation, and could face suspension or being permanently banned from the sport.
