Doctors in Yemen said 63 people had been killed in anti-government protests Monday, and other unconfirmed reports put the number at 70. Witnesses said police and other armed government forces opened fire on protesters and also used tear gas and water cannons to break up the crowds—and then bulldozed to clear the remaining tents in Taiz, the country’s second-largest city. Human-rights activists said they found the bodies of physically handicapped protesters who were trapped in the tents after government forces set fire to them. The violence after negotiations for President Ali Abdullah Saleh's departure broke down, and as the government launched airstrikes against Islamic militants in the coastal city of Zinjibar.
