As Mitt Romney fends off bigoted attacks on his Mormon faith, The Daily Beast’s Peter Beinart laments the fact that Romney continues to hold on to his own prejudices against atheists and Muslims. It’s part of a disturbing phenomenon in GOP politics: “One of the ways that candidates from historically discriminated-against groups legitimize themselves in the Republican Party, it seems, is by opposing equal treatment for other historically discriminated-against groups.” This trend explains why the Republican primary field’s only black candidate is also the most blatantly Islamaphobic, and the field’s only female candidate is the most openly homophobic.
