Society party girl Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, a close family friend of the Windsors, has inadvertently reopened a rather awkward question: are people only nice about Kate and Pippa Middleton because Kate is going to be Queen one day?
In an interview, the original British it girl whose parents were close friends of Prince Charles says that when William and Kate were briefly separated, people were ‘horrible’.
She is probably referring to the fact that various idiotic aristocrats, scandalised at the fact that Kate’s parents had jobs as British Airways cabin crew, were known to shout ‘doors to manual’ whenever Kate and Pippa walked into a room. This habit has now abated for fear of being locked in the social equivalent of the Tower of London.
During her grilling by the Daily Mail, Tara, a former cocaine addict who got a new nose for the Royal Wedding, perhaps unwisely allowed herself to be drawn into discussing the royal relationship.
‘When they briefly split up I said to her, ‘He’ll be back, don’t worry.’ She and her sister Pippa came to my brother’s book launch during the split and people were being kind of horrible to her.’
Ironically T P-T as she is known, concludes her interview saying, ‘William, Harry and me – we grew up together. They are lovely, naughty boys. There is a complete code of trust there, a code that says, ‘Zip it and treasure it’.’Er, quite.
