A Russian foreign ministry spokesman slammed the U.S. on Wednesday for using its own laws to prosecute FIFA officials. “Without going into the details of proposed charges, we note that this is another case of the illegal extraterritorial application of U.S. laws,” said Aleksandr Lukashevich, adding in a statement that he hopes this won’t be used against the organization as a whole. Lukashevich called for the U.S. to stop trying to hold court “far beyond its borders.” Russia will host the 2018 World Cup.
