Scientists Find First Warm-Blooded Fish

For the first time, scientists have apparently discovered a fish that defies all traditional classifications. Only mammals and birds were thought to be warm-blooded, but the Opah fish, also known as the moonfish, is ready to join the club. According to specialists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the 100-pound fish “generate heat as they swim and distribute the warmth throughout their entire disc-shaped bodies by special blood vessels.” Gills minimize heat loss, and they stay warmer than the water temperature even deep in the Pacific where they live.
