With 16 percent of Australia's greenhouse-gas emissions coming from agriculture, scientists are now hoping to breed sheep who burp less, because according to the BBC, "Burping is a far greater cause of emissions in sheep than flatulence." Australia's Sheep Cooperative Research Council says 66 percent of agricultural emissions are released as methane from the gut of sheep and other livestock. Scientists are working on identifying what causes the belching—signs already point to the amount of food given to livestock—to decrease methane emissions, which produces more global warming than carbon dioxide.
