On Friday, the Supreme Court announced that it will hear four cases which challenge the state’s right to ban same-sex marriages—Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee, whose bans were upheld under the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, being the ones in question. It will be the second time the justices have dealt with marriage equality. The first was California’s Proposition 8 marriage amendment (dismissed due to a technicality) in 2013 which also struck down the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional. With 13 states still giving no rights to same-sex couples, the outcome, which is expected in June, could grant marriage equality nationwide and protect same-sex marriages under the U.S. Constitution.
