Ending 18 years in the Senate, Democrat Mary L. Landrieu of Lousiana lost a run-off to Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy on Saturday night, solidifying the GOP's control of the Senate and completing a wave of victories that started on Nov. 5, The New York Times reported. Landrieau had narrowly won a multicandiate primary in November, but Cassidy's victory came as no surprise. The political climate in the south has been brutal to Democrats lately, and indeed, Landrieu was the last Deep South Democrat in the U.S. Senate. With Cassidy's win, the GOP picked up a total of nine seats in the Senate, giving it 54 seats come January when the 114th Congress convenes.
