Throughout Tuesday’s hearing, Petraeus drew praise from the Senate Armed Services Committee for his work in Iraq. He is also widely viewed as a natural candidate to repair many of the rifts that have developed between the military, civilian leadership, and the Afghan government. "We are all firmly united in seeking to forge unity of effort," Petraeus said. But he is also keenly aware that the situation may get worse before it gets better. "My sense is that the tough fighting will continue," Petraeus said Tuesday. "Indeed, it may get more intense."
