Senator’s Intern an Illegal Immigrant

This office does seem kind of lax with the background check. New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez confirmed Wednesday that an 18-year-old unpaid intern in his office is an undocumented immigrant—and a registered sex offender. Luis Abrahan Sanchez Zavaleta was reportedly arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs officials on Dec. 6, and Menendez said he had not even learned of the arrest until this week. Sanchez apparently entered the country on a now-expired visitor visa from Peru. The prosecutor’s office in Hudson County, N.J., said Sanchez had violated the law in 2010, but the exact charges are unclear since he was a juvenile at the time—although he has been confirmed as a registered sex offender.
