At least seven teenage schoolgirls were killed and another 10 injured early Saturday when a fire tore through their Nairobi dormitory, authorities said. The Moi Girls School, which Education Minister Fred Matiangi described as one of the country’s “top schools,” has been shut down pending a government-ordered investigation into the cause of the fire. The blaze broke out at about 2:00 a.m., when the students were asleep. Daniella Maina, one of the survivors, told Reuters the fire triggered a frantic evacuation in the middle of the night. “We were sleeping and a girl woke us up and said that our hostel was burning. We were helped to safety by some teachers,” Maina said.
