Not only does a barnyard smell like, well, a barnyard, but all those gassy animals are ejecting tons of carbon emissions into the air, threatening to accelerate climate change unless something is done. Researchers in sheep-filled New Zealand are studying ways to reduce methane from burping animals, but so far progress has been slow and proposed solutions ranging from garlic and clover cocktails to small doses of chloroform seem to have little effect on their flatulent ways. Political solutions have also failed to get off the ground—a proposed tax on livestock emissions in New Zealand was derided as a "fart tax" and shot down by lawmakers.
