The New York State Assembly has forced out Sheldon Silver as speaker, amidst his federal corruption charges, and will pick his successor in elections to be held Feb. 10. Majority Leader Joseph D. Morelle will be the interim speaker and is a front-runner for the position. Silver has not yet formally resigned, though many fellow Democrats in Albany have called for him to step down.
